The Tri-Nations is an annual competition involving New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Previously this involved each country playing one home and one away game against both other countries. From 2006 the competition has been expanded with each nation playing both the other nations three times. Since Argentina's strong performances in the 2007 World Cup a number of commentators believed they should join the Tri-Nations.. This was firstly proposed for the 2008 tournament, then for 2010, but eventually this prospect came much closer to reality after the 2009 Tri Nations tournament, when SANZAR (South Africa, New Zealand and Australian Rugby) extended an official invitation to the Uni�n Argentina de Rugby (UAR), to join a new revised Four Nations tournament in 2012. This move has been long-anticipated and has generally been met with great approval from all parties involved.The invitation is however subject to certain conditions, like the guaranteed availability of the top Puma players, most of whom play highly paid professional club rugby in Europe at present.

The Australian national rugby union team is the representative side of Australia in rugby union. The national team is nicknamed the Wallabies and competes annually with New Zealand and South Africa in the Tri-Nations Series, in which they also contest the Bledisloe Cup with New Zealand and the Mandela Challenge Plate with South Africa. Australia have competed in all six Rugby World Cups, and have won the World Cup on two occasions, in 1991 against England, and in 1999 against France. Australia also lost in the final after extra time to England in the 2003 competition. Australia are governed by the Australian Rugby Union (ARU). Seven former Australian players have been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame, with one of those also having been inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame.

Australia's only annual tournament is the Tri-Nations played against New Zealand and South Africa�it has been contested since 1996. They have won the competition twice, in 2000 and 2001. Australia's greatest rivals are the All Blacks (New Zealand) with whom they have contested the Bledisloe Cup since 1932. The Bledisloe Cup is now contested during the Tri-Nations. The longest time that Australia have held the Bledisloe is five years; between 1998 to 2002. The Mandela Challenge Plate is also contested between South Africa and Australia during the Tri Nations.

Ireland named their squad for their tour to New Zealand and Australia. Rory Best and Paul O'Connell were both ruled out due to injury and replaced by Fogarty and O'Donoghue. Kevin McLaughlin was also ruled out and was replaced by Niall Ronan. Keith Earls had to pull out of the squad and was replaced by Gavin Duffy. Rugby union is the unofficial national sport of New Zealand. Rugby, as it is generally referred to by New Zealanders, is an integral part of New Zealand culture [citation needed]. The NZRFU joined the IRFB in 1949. There are 26 member unions within New Zealand. Every province also has its own union. In late 2005, New Zealand won the right to host the 2011 World Cup.
